Why I hate the current DLC model

I like DLC. It is a wonderful thing that can be used to breathe new life into games and give gamers a reason to come back and enjoy it all over again. Unfortunately, there has been a disturbing trend with video game companies deliberately withholding content to be sold as what may as well be called "premium content," and even selling weapon advantages in multiplayer games to those willing to pay the price.

Once upon a time, video game companies  had to make sure that games were just right before they could be released, and they had to be complete. If a game was not complete, then people would laugh at their product and not buy it! Nothing could be done to fix the game or add content, so it had to done right the first time. Some of the greatest games ever had to stand the test of time straight out of the box without any capability to add new things to them.

(This does, of course, exclude many PC games, which had the advantage of selling expansion packs, but that is hardly the same thing as DLC)

Then, thanks to new innovations in gaming systems, video game companies found that they were able to easily new content for games over the internet, even on consoles! This was a good thing, because it meant that video game companies could go back and add new life to some of their older games with downloadable content and expansions! It was widely agreed by video game companies and gamers that this was a good thing.

But then video game companies realized that they no longer needed to ensure their game was complete. They started deliberately leaving out content so that they could sell this content to the gamers to make more money. Some video game companies, like Electronic Arts, would leave traces of content in the games, prompting gamers to purchase the DLC so that they could enjoy the content that they had withheld! Sometimes video game companies would even sell special weapon to gamers, giving those who were willing to shell out extra money an upper hand over other gamers who were unwilling to do so.

This is something I cannot tolerate.

If a game is being released with Day One DLC, you can count me out. I want complete games. If a video game company wishes to develop new content after the game is released so that they can sell it later, that is fine with me. I'll be more than happy to purchase it when it comes out, and have done so many times with some of the games I already own. It's nice to be able to go back to an older game and play some new game modes or missions.

If a game is being sold with special advantages for players who wish to shell out money for extra stuff in a multiplayer setting, you bet I won't play. I like a game where everyone is on the same playing field and playing by the same rules. The way I see it, gamers who pay extra for enhanced weapon sets and equipment in a multiplayer setting are cheaters.

That's pretty much all I got.

tl:dr version... screw you EA.

If I were to take a guess, I'd say they're taking a leaf from the MMORPG book. "Hey, people on WOW will pay out the nose for premium weapons and armor, why don't we get in on that?"
I still agree that it's stupid, though.
